Women Should Plan a Safe Running Routine
Run With Partners – The best rule is to run with a partner. It can be a friend who is training with your for a marathon too, or a running buddy who likes to jog while you run. Running with a partner makes your personal safety much better! You can always run with your dog!
Plan Your Running Course – It is not recommended to run through ‘bad neighborhoods’ where you would not feel safe. Some places which are ‘friendly’ during the day become sleazy at night. Make sure you run in lighted areas, run at places where others can see you, running on off beat track behind dense trees or at dark lanes places you in danger.
Run in Random Courses – Do not run in the same exact course every single day, or you might be an easy target.. If your attacker learns your daily routine, they have enough time to plan the place which is comfortable for them to jump you. Be careful when running beside roads! Let Others Know – Tell someone where you are planning to run your daily mileage. Share your running route.
Running at Dusk or Dawn – Be more alert when running at dawn or dusk, these are the best times for people to jump you from the shadows. Wear reflective vest for runners, at these hours you are ‘invisible’ to tired drivers.. Before the sun is up watch our for ice! Use a LED light accessory for runners to see where you place your feet.
Stay Connected – Take your mobile phone with you. Some apps can even track your running course.

- Stay alert at all times. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are.
- Run, walk, or bike with a partner or a dog.
- Don’t wear headsets. If you wear them you won’t hear an approaching car or attacker.
- Listen to your surroundings.
- Exercise in familiar areas. Know which businesses or stores are open.
- Vary your route. That way, a potential attacker won’t get to know your routine.
- Avoid unpopulated areas, deserted streets, and overgrown trails. Especially avoid poorly lit areas at night.
- Run clear of parked cars or bushes. Run against traffic so you can observe approaching automobiles.
- Trust your intuition about a person or an area. It you are unsure about an area, or feel unsafe, leave immediately.
- Ignore verbal harassment. Use discretion in acknowledging strangers. Look directly at others and be observant, but keep your distance and keep moving.
- Be careful if anyone in a car asks you for directions; if you answer, keep at least a full arm’s length from the car.
- If you think you are being followed, change direction and head for open stores, theaters or a lighted house.
- Have your door key ready before you reach your home.
